MAPLETON, Iowa -- Don Ladwig, 78, of Mapleton died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Don Ladwig was born July 30, 1924, in Quimby, Iowa, the son of Emil and Leone (Bruner) Ladwig. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Marcus, Iowa, and confirmed at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Quimby. He attended school in Quimby and graduated in 1942 as valedictorian of his class. He was interested in all athletics, receiving 15 school letters.

He married Elaine Hurd of Meriden, Iowa, in 1947.

He married Mary Lou Hopsecker on May 28, 1961, at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton.

He worked at Midwest Wholesale Grocery, Klotz Food Market, Small's Fruit Market and the Armstrong Funeral Home.

He was very active in the community in which he lived. Some of these activities included serving as 9th District baseball chairman, Northwest Iowa Youth baseball commissioner for 10 years, Monona County American Legion baseball chairman, and he coached the American Legion baseball team for 10 years. He also was past president of the Willow Vale Golf Club and a member of the Mapleton Community Club, first Kiwanis president of Mapleton and Rotary president. He served as treasurer, financial secretary and elder at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, where he also served as stewardship, evangelism and public relations and welfare chairman. He was a member of the Lutheran Layman League and AID Association for Lutherans. He was active as a board member of West Central Development since 1981, and was a board member for the Area XI Education Agency. He was an avid bowler for many years, having held many offices in the bowling league. He also was involved actively in the Mapleton Senior Citizen Center for years.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include two sons and their wives, Larry and Cyndee Ladwig of Greeley, Colo., and David and Connie Ladwig of Cherokee, Iowa; two daughters and their husbands, Shelley and Larry Lenz and Marlys and Dan Anderson, all of Cherokee; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, good friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Lou; a granddaughter; and two sisters.
