Onawa, Iowa—Helen Steiner, 87, of Onawa passed away Thursday, October 28, 2010, at Burgess Health Center at Onawa.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, with the Rev. Linda Boggs and Rev. Harvey Hanson officiating. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Rose Hill Cemetery at Emerson, Nebr. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Helen was born Feb. 14, 1923, in Lyons, Nebr., the daughter of John and Caroline (Einemann) Heinemann.

Helen and Fred A. Steiner were united in marriage on July 18, 1945 at West Point, Nebr. They farmed in the Lyons area before moving to Blencoe, Iowa, where Fred was a farm laborer. Fred passed away Dec. 31, 1977.

Helen was affiliated with the First Christian Church at Onawa and was an avid reader of her Bible. She was always a kid’s person and gave loving care to many children in the Blencoe and Onawa area. Her life revolved around her family and she was always there to cook their favorite dishes. She also enjoyed doing word searches and reading magazines and newspapers, where she would find clippings of interest to tuck away.

Survivors include her children, Carol Steiner of Onawa, Diane Batchelder of Greensboro, N.C., LeRoy Steiner of Onawa, Lois (Michael) Ellis of Onawa, Marie Laughlin of Onawa, Susan Loyd of Onawa and Robert (Susan) Steiner of Turin, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Petersen of Bancroft, Nebr.; two brothers, Bernard (June) Heinemann of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and Walter Heinemann of Dakota City, and three sisters-in-law, Millie Heinemann of South Sioux City, Beverly Heinemann of South Sioux City and Ellen Heinemann of Spokane, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; a son-in-law, Thomas Batchelder; four sisters, Margaret, Emma, Alice and Dorothy; and five brothers, Johnie, George, Adolph, Clarence and Oto.
