Mildred Grapes, daughter of pioneer parents, John R. and Wealthea Grapes, was born on a farm near Blencoe July 13, 1907. Shortly after the death of her father in 1917, the family moved to Onawa. She attended the Onawa public school and graduated from the high school in 1925.

On August 2, 1924, she was united in marriage to Addison D. Oliver of Onawa. To this union was born one son, David Addison Oliver.

In 1928 they moved to the Oliver Ranch. On November 2, 1944, she assumed the position of manager of the Oliver Ranch Airport, in which capacity she served well and faithfully.

Her 10 years of patient suffering were ended by death in a Sioux City hospital March 18, 1946.

She was a member of the Congregational church of Onawa, the Priscilla Society of Blencoe and the Civil Air Patrol.

She is survived by her husband, Addison D. Oliver, her son, David, of the U.S. Navy, her three sisters, Mrs. Rudolph Howaschultz of Blencoe, Mrs. Wayne Ropes of Des Moines, Mrs. Clair Watson of Blencoe and one brother, Henry Grapes of Onawa.

She was a devoted wife, a faithful friend and a loving mother.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 22nd, at 2:30 p.m. at the Congregational church in Onawa with Rev. John Rogers of Blencoe and Rev. Lawrence Murphy of Onawa officiating. “The Lords Prayer” was sung by Dorothy Brooks and the “Old Rugged Cross” by Lois Rock, Annette Carlson and Dorothy Brooks with Mrs. Jana Mobley accompanying them on the piano.

The ballbearers were Roy Adkins, Bernard Dugdale, Clifford Cartmill, Emil Alfredson, Oscar Falk and Glen Myrland, Church ushers were Willard Oliver and Robert Underhill.
Interment was made in the family lot in the Onawa cemetery with the Pearson Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
