During his years in high school, he was an outstanding athlete in football and track and was honored with second team All State in football.

He was always a very devoted father and husband who always provided the best for his family. He always loved attending his children’s functions, and never missed a sporting event. He was always very proud of his kids’ accomplishments. He was a lifelong farmer, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. Richard was a great outdoorsman and spent many hours during both summer and winter months outdoors. He found great joy in fishing, hunting, trapping and mushroom hunting. His love for fishing provided yearly family vacations to Lake Benton, Minn. He was always a very much anticipated time for his entire family. His kids will always remember what an excellent fish fryer he became. He also spent many winter days trapping mink and muskrat or ice fishing. IN not outdoors, he enjoyed playing cards with his many friends in the Whiting Card room. He also spent many hours playing cribbage with his son-in-law. In August 1998, he was forced to retire due to failing health. Although confined to his home for the past several years, he truly enjoyed visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was fortunate enough to be blessed with his wife of 49 years and caretaker, along with his children who were able to provide his care in his home until his final moments.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Karen; his six children, Robyn (Harlan) Leiber of South Sioux City, Renee (Tim) Butt of Houston, Texas, Ronda (Tom) MacClure, Rich and Rod Anderson, and Rachel (Rich) Martian, all of Whiting; 12 grandchildren, Andrea Hurni, Angie Kamradt, Amy Brooks, Amber Barclay, Ashley Hutnek, Lindsey Michaud, Laura and Rose MacClure and Wade Ben and Katelyn Martian; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Sally Valentine of Whiting; a sister-in-law, Priscilla (Clifford) Cox of Castana, Iowa; a brother-in-law Eddie (Patty) Foster of Grand Island, Nebr.
