ONAWA, Iowa -- Joyce Darlene Mander, 83, of Onawa died Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Tom Scott officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.

Joyce Darlene Mander, daughter of Walter and Flora (Hoar) Kelly, was born Jan. 28, 1928, at her parents' home four miles south of Onawa. She was raised and educated in the area of her birth and graduated from Onawa High School with the class of 1946. Following high school, Joyce attended Samuel's Beauty School.

On Dec. 29, 1946, Joyce was united in marriage to Elvin A. Mander at the Onawa Methodist Church parsonage with Rev. Harvey C. Travis performing the single-ring ceremony. To this union one daughter was born, Dorothy. The family made their home on a farm near Whiting. Joyce was a homemaker and also worked at Liz Ditman's Beauty Shop in Whiting for several years. In 1975, Joyce and Elvin moved to a farm near Onawa. Elvin passed away on March 25, 2005, and Joyce continued to make her home on the farm until moving to Pleasant View Care Center in 2006.

Joyce enjoyed cooking, canning and caring for her large vegetable garden. She had been a member of Whiting Christian Church and First Christian Church in Onawa.

Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Dorothy Wade and her husband, Richard of Onawa; two grandchildren, Dayne Wade and wife, Stephanie of Akron, Ohio, and Kelly Black and husband, Jeff of Knoxville, Tenn.; two great-grandchildren, Aidan and Tyler Black of Knoxville; one brother-in-law, Elroy Mander of Crescent, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Lula Mae Mander of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Phyllis Mander of Onawa; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elvin; five brothers-in-law, Edward, Earl, Ervin, Ernest and Elmer; and three sisters-in-law, Florence, Flavia and Muriel.

Memorials may be directed to First Christian Church in Onawa or Whiting Christian Church.
