MAPLETON, Iowa -- Claire L. Prokop, 92, of Mapleton died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at his home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, with Rev. Dr. Klaus Raab officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Friday, with the family present 4 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Claire Louis Prokop was born May 9, 1918, near Danbury, Iowa, the son of Nicholas and Kathryn Margaret (Smith) Prokop. He grew up and attended school in the Danbury area. He soon started farming in the Danbury community.

On Dec. 18, 1948, he married Lillie (Storjohann) Wood. They farmed for two years in the Kingsley, Iowa, area and in March 1951, moved their family to a farm near Battle Creek, Iowa. Retiring from farming in 1973, Claire and Lillie moved into Mapleton. She passed away on Feb. 26, 1989.

Claire was able to express his love of the John Deere brand working at Collins Implement in Mapleton. There he shared his special knowledge with corn planters. From 1992 to 2004, he worked for the city of Mapleton, primarily doing the lawn mowing taking extra pride in the lawn care he provided to Mount Hope Cemetery. He also worked for Joe Jessen on the farm for a time.

He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton. He enjoyed his lifelong appreciation for horses, having learned how to farm with work horses. Other than work, his hobbies were few, but he did like playing cards, the casino penny machines, visiting with friends, and some small wood working projects in later years.

Survivors include one son, Randy Prokop and his wife, Louanna of Peru, Ind.; two stepsons, Dean Wood and his companion, Lana Sadler of Aiken, S.C., and Vern Wood and his wife, Karen of Schleswig, Iowa; six step-grandchildren, Roger Wood, Dennis Wood and his wife, Lyse Wood, Danette Miller and her husband, Robert, Ross Wood and his wife, Malory, Don Dewey and Tim Wallace; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with his wife, Claire was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John, Cecil and Bernard; and three sisters, Alice Bridgeman, Leonilla Sorenson and Dorothy McGrain.
