WHITING, Iowa -- Charles E. West, 62, of Brandon, S.D., formerly of Whiting, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2011, in the V.A. Hospital at Sioux Falls, S.D., due to cancer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Whiting Christian Church, with Dr. Emery Killian officiating. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery, rural Whiting. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service at Onawa, Iowa.

Charles Edwin was born Jan. 18, 1949, at Pisgah, Iowa, the son of Merle and Marjorie (Myers) West. He was raised in the Whiting area and graduated from Whiting High School in the class of 1967. He joined the U.S. Navy on March 22, 1968, and served in the Seabees and Naval Reserve until his honorable discharge on Nov. 19, 1973.

Chuck was dearly loved by those around him, and he will be missed by many.

Survivors include his special friend, Shirley Popken of Brandon; three children, Shawntel (Mark) Tramp of Crofton, Neb., Shannon Santo of Lincoln, Neb., and Temple Wright of Knoxville, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Tiffany, Allison, Elisa, Austin and Jena Tramp, Logan and Nolan Santo and Laney Wright; and six sisters, Linda (Arvid) Hanson of Whiting, Cathy Bryan of Whiting, Patricia McCall of Onawa, Susan (Chuck) Ferris of Onawa, Christine Dowson of Sioux City, and Jennifer (Brian) Moffatt of Omaha, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents; paternal and maternal grandparents; a brother, William West; a brother-in-law, Ronnie McCall; and a nephew, Chad.
