ONAWA, Iowa -- Lola (Larson) Schmitz, 83, Onawa passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, with the Rev. Barb Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time Friday at the funeral home.

Lola was born April 3, 1928, in Lake Norden, S.D., the daughter of Edward and Alma (Berg) Larson. She graduated from Bryant (S.D.) High School in 1946 and attended Northern State Teacher's College to earn her teaching credentials. She taught school in Sioux City, then in Onawa for many years. She later worked for several years in the Monona County Auditors office and volunteered as an election judge.

Survivors include her son and his wife, Frank and Hilary Schmitz of Chicago, Ill.; three grandsons, James, John and Thomas Schmitz of Chicago; a sister, Lee Flagg of Danville, Calif.; and a brother and his wife, George and Joyce Larson of Cambridge, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert; her parents; two sisters, Ione Ryan and Edna Dokken; and a brother, Edward Larson.
