ONAWA, Iowa -- Avis Lorrain (Wakehouse) Hansen, 86, passed away April 12, 2011, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel in Council Bluffs, with the Rev. Pastor David Erickson of First Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Council Bluffs. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Avis was born Sept. 17, 1924, on the family farm near Woodbine, Iowa, to Edward and Lily (Nuzum) Wakehouse. She moved to a farm near Pisgah, Iowa, at the age of 5 and graduated from Pisgah High School in 1940. She attended Wayne State Teachers College, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in 1950.

Avis was united in marriage to Hiram (Hi) K. Hansen on Jan. 1, 1945. She also attended Colorado State College of Education with her husband. Avis was a longtime teacher in communities in Iowa and Nebraska and retired after 49 years.

She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Sorority of Women in Education, a 57-year member of First Christian Church, where she was very active in children's programs.

She is survived by daughters, Valerie Nelson (Danny) of Council Bluffs, and Paula Turner (Greg) of Chesapeake Beach, Md.; son, Doug Hansen of Council Bluffs; and grandchildren, Joseph, Zachary, Katharine, Joshua and Sarah Turner.

Avis was preceded in death by her husband, Hiram "Hi" K. Hansen; infant daughter, Sheryl; parents; and brother, Darrel Wakehouse.

Family will direct memorials.
