SLOAN, Iowa -- Carol Ann (Smith) Olson, 66, Omaha, formerly of Hornick and Sloan, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at her residence after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Skien Lutheran Church, 11929 Aspen Ave., rural Sloan, with the Rev. Craig Bock and Rev. Catie Newman officiating. Private family graveside services will be in Fairview Township Cemetery, Albaton, Iowa. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Hornick United Methodist Church in Hornick, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Carol Ann was born Dec. 25, 1944, in Sioux City, the daughter of Milton and Irene (Sulsberger) Smith. She was raised in Hornick and graduated from Westwood High School in 1963.

Carol Ann married Larry Olson on Aug. 31, 1963, at Skien Lutheran Church in Albaton. Two children, Nancy and Jim, were born to this union. They resided on a farm in rural Sloan. She had lived in Omaha since 1992 and had been employed at Christopher & Banks, Younkers and Kelly's Carpets.

She was a member of Skien Lutheran Church. She enjoyed dancing, golf, ceramics, knitting and cards. Carol Ann had a vivacious personality and enjoyed her many friends and family.

Survivors include her children, Nancy and John Riley of Phoenix, Ariz., and their family, Allie and Drew, Jim and Kris Olson of Sloan and their family, Alec and Quintin and Sonya and Todd Bentley of Phoenix and their family, Jordyn and Brooke; her mother, Irene Smith of Hornick; her siblings, Garold (Deanna) Smith of Salix, Iowa, Bill (Pat) Smith of Hornick, Connie Goodwin of Sioux City, Dennis (Pat) of Onawa and Diana Brink of Omaha; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her father, Milton Smith; and a brother-in-law, Rene Goodwin.
