ONAWA, Iowa -- Ken Stephens, 62, Onawa passed away Saturday, April 30, 2011, at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead, Iowa, with the Rev. Carla Johnsen officiating. Burial will be in Spring Valley Cemetery, Moorhead, with military honors conducted by the U.S. Navy and American Legion David McNeill Post 129. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Kenneth Richard Stephens was born Oct. 29, 1948, in Long Beach, Calif., the son of Delbert and Barbara (Amundson) Stephens. As a young boy, he was raised in California and later moved to Iowa where he attended East Monona School. After moving to Texas, he joined the U.S. Navy in November 1965 and served during the Vietnam War. He was an aviation fuels technician and specialized as an underwater demolition expert until his discharge on Dec. 12, 1972.

Ken and Cathy Kratz were united in marriage on May 4, 2003, in Onawa. They lived in Oregon prior to relocating to Onawa in November 2010. Ken made his home in many states, including California, Texas, Oregon and Iowa. He was in facility services at the University of Oregon in Eugene.

He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed cooking and grilling. Ken played the guitar and during the time he was in Hawaii, regularly visited the children's wards at the hospitals to entertain them. He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Cathy of Onawa; two daughters, Patti Davis of Eugene, Ore., and Tammy (Troy) Bayliss of Monroe, Ore.; four grandchildren, Gavin and Liam Bayliss, Kayla Stephens and Kenny Davis; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Loyle and Ethel Mae Kratz of Onawa; brothers, Delbert Stephens of Cleburne, Texas, Troy Stephens of Arlington, Texas, Tracy (Andrea) Stephens of Augusta, Ga., and Buddy Stephens of Pearland, Texas; and a sister, Cindy (Richard) Lunsford of Manvel, Texas.

His parents preceded him in death.
