MAPLETON, Iowa -- Mary E. Seuntjens, 92, of Mapleton died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Terry Roder and Rev. LeRoy Seuntjens officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a rosary at 3:30 p.m. conducted by the St. Mary's Guild, the family present 5 to 7:30 p.m. and a vigil wake service at 6:30 p.m., at the church. Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Mary Elizabeth Seuntjens was born Aug. 8, 1918, at Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Pearl (Groff) Oberman. After graduating from high school, she completed four years at Clarke College in Dubuque on a music scholarship. Mary worked at a power company in Des Moines and the Defense Department in East Dubuque, Ill.

On April 10, 1944, she was united in marriage to Wayne Seuntjens at the Church of the Nativity in Dubuque, Iowa. With Wayne being stationed in California, the couple moved to Palm Springs, where Mary worked at the Ration Board. While Wayne was serving overseas in World War II, Mary returned home to Iowa and worked at the Ration Board in Dubuque. Upon Wayne's return from serving in Italy, they lived in Albuquerque, N.M., where Mary worked at the Fish and Wildlife Division. After Wayne's discharge, they made their home and raised their family in the farming community of Mapleton.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton as well as St. Mary's Guild, where she served as president. She was also a member of various card clubs over the years including the bridge club and was active in the American Legion Auxiliary. Mary loved to play the piano and dance. She also had an affection for her flowers.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Wayne; three sons and their wives, Doug and Debbie Seuntjens and Jack and Marla Seuntjens, all of Mapleton, and Chris and Irene Seuntjens of Ankeny, Iowa; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother and his wife, Jack and Denise Oberman of Mission Viejo, Calif.; and one sister and her husband, Pat and Wil Belmer of Dubuque.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Pearl Oberman; a son, Mark Seuntjens; a brother and his wife, Paul and Eunice Oberman; and a sister and her husband, Jane and Bruce Brady.
