MOORHEAD, Iowa -- Bernice P. Johnson, 88, of Woodbine, Iowa, formerly of Moorhead, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, at Rose Vista Home in Woodbine.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead, with the Rev. Carla Johnsen officiating. Burial will be in Spring Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Bernice was born Jan. 19, 1923, near Correctionville, Iowa, the daughter of Louis A. and Maggie (Buehler) Frost. She was raised in the Correctionville area and graduated from Correctionville High School in 1940. She furthered her education at Morningside College in Sioux City and received a teaching certificate. She taught in rural schools in Woodbury County, Cushing High School and Moorhead High School.

While teaching in Moorhead, she met Howard "Hap" Johnson. They were married in Washta, Iowa, on Aug. 13, 1950. Hap passed away on March 1, 1966. She worked at Sharon's Café and Twin Valley Veterinary Office.

She was an active member of Bethesda Lutheran Church and American Legion Auxiliary. Bernice's life revolved around her children and grandchildren, and she enjoyed baking their favorites, Bernie buns, Danish pastries, brownies and apple bars. She also enjoyed gardening and quilting.

Survivors include her three children, Gale and Kris Johnson of Moorhead, Alan and Lisa Johnson of Moorhead, and Carolyn and Steve Eby of Logan, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Jaime (Brad) Smith of Aurora, Colo., Jill (Robby) Savage of Fort Collins, Colo., Jessica (Gary) Keppy of Centennial, Colo., Mike and Aaron Johnson of Moorhead, Nick Johnson of Denison, Iowa, Melissa (Brett) Selk of Missouri Valley, Iowa, and Mark Unruh (Jennifer Payne) of Logan; great-grandchildren, Shannon, Ashley, Rayna and Kylan Smith, Aleah and Parker Savage and Evan and Mackenzie Keppy; four brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Carroll and Jeanne Johnson of Moorhead, Ernest Shroeder of Honey Creek, Iowa, and Nola Eskelsen of Moorhead; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law, Lena and Andrew Johnson; a sister, Bessie Moos; two brothers, George and Leland Frost; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Memorials may be directed to Bethesda Lutheran Church.
