ONAWA, Iowa -- Dorothy Sorenson, 82, of Onawa passed away Friday, Dec. 31, 2010 at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Onawa United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Angela Gafford Asmus officiating. Burial will be in the Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service at Onawa.

Dorothy Louise was born Nov. 28, 1928, at Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Mabel R. (Taft) Chute. She graduated from Onawa High School in 1946. After graduation she worked at the Onawa Bank.

Dorothy and Everett Sorenson were united in marriage on Aug. 4, 1950, at Onawa, Iowa. They made their home in Onawa where they raised their two sons, Nick and Daniel. In 1958, Dorothy was employed at Monona County Social Services and later was director of both Monona and Ida Counties until her retirement. Everett passed away March 24, 2004.

Dorothy was a member of Onawa United Methodist Church. She was very active in her community having served as a board member of Center Heights, Monona County Health and many other boards. Also, she was a founding member of the A.I.D. Center in Sioux City. In the mid 1980s, she received volunteer of the year award from Gov. Terry Branstad.

Survivors include a son, Nick Sorenson of Onawa; two sisters, Ruth and her husband, Don Murphy of Fairbanks, Ark., and Margaret "Meg" and her husband, Jim Polly of Whiting, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Bessie Sorenson and Mary Jane Sorenson, both of Onawa; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Daniel Sorenson; and a sister, Rosemary Chute of Virginia Beach, Va..
