ONAWA, Iowa -- Raymond H. "Dude" Letterly, 103, of Onawa, formerly of Mapleton, Iowa, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church in Onawa, with the Rev. John Sears officiating. Burial will be in Kennebec Cemetery, Castana, Iowa. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.

Raymond Harold "Dude" Letterly, son of Adam and Emma (Ingram) Letterly, was born July 4, 1907, in Xenia, Ill. When Dude was 1-year old, his family moved to Iowa. He attended country school, then Onawa High School. Dude lived in Monona County all his life except for four years in Minnesota.

Dude married Alice Anderson of Whiting, Iowa in 1935, at Sioux City. She passed away on Jan. 31, 1988.

Dude was united in marriage in South Dakota to Fern McCall of Castana, Iowa. They made their home in Monona County and recently lived at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Dude enjoyed wood carving, which he followed for many years. He won many ribbons at state shows in Waterloo, Iowa, and international shows in Davenport, Iowa.

Dude is survived by his wife, Fern of Onawa; stepsons; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alice; two brothers, Armont Letterly and Velmo Letterly and his wife, Fern; one sister, Sally Mankenberg and her husband, Clifford; three half brothers, Herman, Fred and Floyd Letterly; and four half sisters, Lulu Stoll, Anna Shroth, Edythe Chapman and Myrtle Smith.
