WHITING, Iowa -- Raymond G. Fischer, 98, of Whiting died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, in Sergeant Bluff.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa, with the Rev. Angela Gafford Asmus officiating. Burial will be at Whiting City Cemetery. No visitation is planned.

Raymond George Fischer, son of Edward Henry and Louise Anna (Hans) Fischer, was born Aug. 26, 1912, in Hartington, Neb. Ray was raised in the area of his birth and he attended country school, then went to Wynot (Neb.) High School, graduating in 1931. While in school, Ray pitched for the baseball team. In 1934, Ray moved to Whiting and worked on a ranch north of town.

On Jan. 28, 1935, Ray was united in marriage to Mable Bliven. To this union six children were born, Carol, Jerry, Kenny, Ron, Marilyn and Dean. The family made their home on farms north of Whiting and Ray farmed for several years, retiring in 1964. That same year, Ray and Mable moved into Whiting and he began working as a custodian at the school until retiring in the late 1970s. Mable passed away on June 6, 1999. Ray continued making his home in Whiting until moving to Sergeant Bluff in 2006.

Ray enjoyed woodworking, watching baseball, music and traveling during retirement. Ray was a longtime 4-H leader, a member of the NFO and was active in the Whiting Christmas Organization.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Carol and husband, Tom Houchins of Sioux City, Jerry and wife, Carolyn Fischer of Mesa, Ariz., Ron and wife, Vicky Fischer of Eden Prairie, Minn., Marilyn Fischer and Alan Zussman of Madison, Wis., and Dean and wife, Mary Fischer of Sergeant Bluff; one daughter-in-law, Phyllis and husband, Bill Arledge of Omaha; 12 grandchildren, Kurt, Kerry and wife, Chris, Keith, Todd and wife, Dani, Sheri and husband, Joel, Clay and wife, Shawn, Jeb and wife, Dyana, Josh and wife, Katie, Paul, Heather and husband, Tomas, Stacy and husband, Keith, and Dawn; 19 great-grandchildren, Korey, Kolton, Kayla, Konner, Sydney, Tristan, Travis, Trevor, Kenny, Samantha, Kendra, Nash, Seth, Grace, Sara, Donovan, T.J., Kyan and Kamden; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Edward and wife, Jane Fischer of Nebraska City, Neb.; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mable; one son, Kenny; siblings, Art, Clarence, Takla, Greg, Mercedes, Fred, Ernie, Carolyn, Jerome, Anna Mae, Rosella and Jeanette.
