.SOLDIER, Iowa -- Gordon O. Swenson, 78, of Soldier passed away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Soldier Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Carla Johnsen officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Gordon was born April 20, 1932, in Soldier, the son of Adolph and Ida Christina (Nelson) Swenson. He was baptized and confirmed at Soldier Lutheran Church, where he was a lifelong member. He also served as trustee and was active in the Soldier Country Church and Cemetery. He graduated from Soldier High School.

He was united in marriage to Jackie Dickinson on Jan. 21, 1951, at Soldier Lutheran Church. The couple farmed and raised their children in rural Soldier, where he was a lifelong farmer, Renze Seed dealer, member of the Monona County Cattlemen's Association, and took part in the 4-H share-a-calf program. Jackie passed away Oct. 6, 2009, in Onawa, Iowa.

He served on the Soldier Valley Homes Board and was also a Willow Township trustee. Gordon enjoyed restoring antique tractors, his 1952 Chevy business coupe, and playing cards.

Survivors include three daughters, Laurie Swenson of Denison, Iowa, Jill (Bill) Hogancamp of Onawa, and Mari (Dwight) Miller of Onawa; seven grandchildren, Gordon (Amy) Ehlers, Tami (Kirk) Buckley, Lucas Ehlers, Amy Hogancamp, Lindsay (Chuck) Blankman, Nick (Mindy) Holverson and Kira (Brandon) Jensen; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Clayton (Dorothy) Swenson of Soldier; one sister-in-law, Ann Swenson of Soldier; and a brother-in-law John and (Gaylene) Dickinson of Phoenix, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie; his parents, Adolph and Ida; a son, Jeff; and a brother, Maynard Swenson.
