MAPLETON, Iowa -- John E. Lintin, 90, of Mapleton, formerly of Soldier, Iowa, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton, with the Rev. Don Studley officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery at Ute, Iowa, with military graveside honors provided by the American Legion Aaby Post 442 and VFW Post 5605, both of Ute. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., with Harvey Hanson officiating at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

John Edward Lintin was born June 26, 1920, on a farm near Ute, Iowa, the son of William and Louisa (Mauch) Lintin. He grew up in the area, graduating from Ute High School. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Jan. 11, 1942, and honorably discharged on Dec. 17, 1943. He returned home and began his career in farming.

On April 15, 1945, John was united in marriage to Verda Baeth at the home of Verda's parents in Schleswig, Iowa. The couple then farmed and raised their family in the Danbury, Battle Creek, and Mapleton area, lastly near Soldier, Iowa. Along with farming, John worked at IBP for a number of years, where he served as union president. Later he worked at Anderson Construction, where he proudly specialized in cement work. John and Verda moved to Mapleton in 2000. She passed away Nov. 23, 2007.

He was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton, the Masonic Lodge, and was a member for more than 60 years of the American Legion Aaby Post 442 of Ute, Iowa. He enjoyed his vegetable garden, playing cards, fishing, and especially entertaining his grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, James and his companion, Diane Owens of Soldier, Iowa, and Daniel and his partner, Mikel Hampel of LaCrosse, Wis.; two daughters and their husbands, Nancy and Tom Schroeder of Las Vegas, Nev., and Jean and Ray Bernacchi of Tekamah, Neb.; one daughter-in-law, JoAnn Lintin of Onawa, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Along with his wife, John was preceded in death by his parents; one son, John Charles Lintin; one brother, William Lintin; and one sister, Edith Mae Lintin.
