UTE, Iowa -- Marvin D. Larson, 79, of Ute died unexpectedly Friday, Oct. 29, 2010, at his home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute, with the Rev. Jason Cooper officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery, with military rites provided by the Ute VFW Post 5605 and the American Legion Aaby Post 442 of Ute. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Kathryn Spracklin officiating, at the funeral home.

Marvin Dewayne Larson was born June 9, 1931, to A. Reynold and Frieda (Bern) Larson, on a farm near Charter Oak, Iowa. He was baptized at the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak, where he was a lifelong member. He attended country schools near Charter Oak.

He married the love of his life, Donna Leisinger, on June 14, 1952, in Denison, Iowa Marvin served as a medic in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany. Marvin returned from the service and began farming in 1955, near Charter Oak. Marvin and Donna moved to a farm near Ute in 1964, where they raised their four children. He had a passion for farming and especially raising livestock. They sold the farm in 1983 and moved to to Ute. Marvin drove a school bus for the Charter Oak-Ute schools for 10 years. He also worked at the Mapleton Sale Barn, Gregerson Elevator, and was a police officer for the city of Ute for two years. He also did lawn care for the Walter-Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute for decades as well as mowing many other lawns and the St. Clair Cemetery at Ute.

Marvin was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a big Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinals fan. He had a passion for collecting and restoring John Deere tractors. He loved gardening and took pride in sharing his flower garden with others. Marvin will also be remembered for his sense of humor and pride shown toward his kids and grandkids.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Donna; daughter, Terri Kuhlmann and son-in-law, Barry of Good Thunder, Minn.; son, John Larson and daughter-in-law, Joleen of Soldier, Iowa; daughter, Lisa Hicks and son-in-law, Jerry of Denison, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Michael, Amanda, and Jordyn Kuhlmann, Dawn Shearer and her husband, David, Ryan Larson, Pat Hicks and his wife, Deana, Heather Hicks, and Tyler Larson; and one great-granddaughter, Sommer Hicks.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bob; a sister, Frances; a son, Ronnie; and a granddaughter, Stephanie.
