18 October 2010ONAWA, Iowa -- Paul M. Benjamin, 83, Onawa passed away Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Patrick O'Kane, celebrant. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a Scripture prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service of Onawa.
Paul was a lifelong resident of Monona County and farmed the family land just north of Onawa, where he was born May 13, 1927. He was the son of Thomas Herbert "Bert" and Edith (Messing) Benjamin. Paul attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Onawa High School in 1945. He then began farming with his father and brothers.
He was a lifelong member of St. John's Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic minister and a head usher for decades. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus. Paul served as an Ashton township trustee for many years. He enjoyed ballroom dancing and square dancing.
Survivors include a sister, Helen Ryan of Blencoe, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Verla of Onawa, and Bernice of South Sioux City; and 17 nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Benjamin and Virginia Beck; four brothers, Rev. George Benjamin, Herbert, Maurice and Thomas; and a nephew, Matthew Benjamin.
