SIOUX CITY -- Peggy Juanita (Greer) Edgington, 90, of Sioux City, formerly Mapleton, Iowa, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.

There will be a memorial gathering at a later date. Arrangements are under direction of Waterbury Funeral Services in Sergeant Bluff.

Peggy was born Aug. 23, 1920, at Boone, Iowa, daughter of Charles and Louise (Oghe) Greer. She graduated from Cherokee (Iowa) High School in 1938, attended Iowa State University and Lutheran School of Nursing in Sioux City, graduating in 1942 with a degree in nursing.

She married Ralph Edgington of Mapleton in 1942 and moved to the Mapleton area, where she and Ralph farmed and operated the John Deere and Pontiac dealerships. She also worked in several area hospitals, assisting with the delivery of many babies over decades of nursing service.

Peggy was a member of the Order of Eastern Star (Worthy Matron), Mapleton Country Club and Mapleton Flying Club. She avidly pursued many different activities, including fishing, sewing, golf, bowling, water skiing, crafting, raising puppies, and flying (soloing at age 55). She enjoyed, for more than 30 years, vacations at the family cabin in Ontario.

Her greatest joy was time with family and friends. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, being especially proud of her twin grandsons, Michael and Marcus Edgington, always closely following their activities.

In addition to her grandsons, Peggy is survived by her son, Ray, and his wife, Carla of Sioux City; stepgrandchildren, Theresa Sexton of Rochester, Minn., and Andrea Westergard of Akron, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Genevieve Edgington of Omaha; and seven nieces and nephews, including her sister's children, Peg Robbins of Des Moines, and Don Hughes of Sioux City. She was very appreciative of her special friendship with Evelyn and Vernon Thies of Mapleton and Barb and Gene Pelchat of Sioux City.

Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; her sister, Jayne Hughes; three brothers-in-law, Donald Hughes, John Edgington and Frank Edgington; a sister-in-law, Emma Jean Edgington; and close friend, Rowena Bennett of Mapleton.

Her family wishes to express gratitude for the very kind and considerate care provided by the staff of Holy Spirit Retirement Home, St. Luke's Hospital, and Hospice of Siouxland, during Peggy's last illness.

Memorials may be directed to Siouxland Humane Society, 1015 Tri-View Ave., Sioux City, IA. 51103 or Hospice of Siouxland, 4300 Hamilton, Blvd., Sioux City, IA. 51104.
