BLENCOE, Iowa -- Dorothy A. Bridgford, 91, Onawa, Iowa, formerly of Blencoe, passed away Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Blencoe United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Linda Boggs officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Dorothy Anne was born March 13, 1919, near Dunlap, Iowa, the daughter of Edgar A. Sr. and Della R. (Fox) Rannells. She was raised on the family farm near Dunlap and graduated from Dunlap High School in 1936. She attended Morningside College in Sioux City for two years. She then taught in rural school for a time before graduating with a B.A. in 1941. Her first year of teaching was in Hawarden (Iowa) High School, where she met her future husband.

Dorothy and Earl R. Bridgford were united in marriage on Aug. 17, 1944, in Dunlap. The couple taught in Castana, Iowa, before moving to Blencoe, where she taught until 1963. She then took a position at Whiting (Iowa) High School, where she taught and directed plays until her retirement in 1975. She was once nominated for the National Teacher of the Year award, and is remembered fondly by the numerous students she mentored over the years.

After retirement, Dorothy stayed active with various community organizations, including PEO, her church and the Onawa Women's Club, where she directed and presented a number of programs through the literature department. She put her years of experience with public speaking and drama to good use for a variety of projects, including directing a pageant for the Monona County Centennial.

She is survived by her sister, Cecil Cilka of Denver, Colo.; two sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews; numerous cousins; and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her brothers, Edgar and Paul.
