SOLDIER, Iowa -- Omar "Bill" Nelson, 95, of Onawa, Iowa, formerly of Soldier, Iowa, passed away Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010 at Soldier Lutheran Church, Soldier, Iowa with Pastor Carla Johnsen officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery at Ute, Iowa. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Tuesday, all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service at Onawa.

Archie Omar Nelson was born Sept. 6, 1915, at Soldier, Iowa, the son of Archie O. and Lena (Dickinson) Nelson. When he was 1 year old, he moved with his parents to a farm three miles east of Soldier and attended Hartigan School.

Omar and Mary Ann McShannon were united in marriage in 1936. The couple made their home in Soldier, where Omar was a postal clerk, for a few years before moving to Lincoln and Omaha, Neb., during the World War II years. After the war, they returned to Soldier, and in 1947 Omar regained employment at the post office and served as postmaster until his retirement in 1975. Mary Ann passed away in 1992. Recently, Omar had been living at the Premier Estates at Onawa, Iowa.

Omar was a member of Soldier Lutheran Church. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and, also, the couple enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include a son-in-law, Dean Nepper of Ute; a daughter-in-law, Sandy Roberts of Tyler, Texas; five grandchildren, Doug Nepper (special friend Kim King), Elisa Umscheid, Scott Nelson, Melissa (Russ) Anderson and Shannon (Ilmer) Maradiaga; and several great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Mary Ann, he was preceded in death by a son, Donald; a daughter, Mary Lee Nepper; and three siblings.
