MAPLETON, Iowa -- Esther F. Rickert, 82, of Mapleton died Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Dr. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Esther Frieda Fick Rickert was born to John and Meta (Meyer) Fick on Aug. 19, 1927, in Monona County, Iowa. She graduated from Mapleton High School in 1945, then attended Morningside College for three months to obtain her teaching certificate. She taught country school in Woodbury and Monona counties from 1945 to 1947 and had her two siblings, Dora and Wilma as students.

She met Walter William Rickert from Mapleton, and they were married on Nov. 30, 1947, by the Rev. Daryl Schmidt in a double wedding with Marie Rickert and Harvey Muckey. The Rickerts made their home in rural Mapleton and raised their four children on the family farm. In 1985, Walt and Esther moved to town where she continued teaching Sunday School and was active at St. Matthew Lutheran Church.

Esther enjoyed quilting, feeding her birds, and flower gardening; she had quite a green thumb. Her main passion was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was survived by her children, Lois Kettering of Lake View, Iowa, Lori LaVoy of Springfield, Mo., and James Rickert of Mapleton; her grandchildren, Lance, Chad, Justin, Rachel, Brianne, and Nathan; great-grandchildren, Brooks and Caleb; her sisters, Alta Patterson of Anthon, Iowa, Opal Maguire of Danbury, Iowa, Dora Chellow and her husband, Lowell of Sioux City, and Wilma Siefker and her husband, Doug of Sioux City; as well as many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; a son, Jeffrey; brothers, Wilfred and Arnold; and her parents, John and Meta.
