Kermit Oscar Amunson of Ute, Iowa, died Wednesday, November 27, 1996, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa at the age of 82 years, 2 months and 17 days.

Mr. Amunson was born September 10, 1914, on the Amunson homestead east of Soldier, Iowa to Olaf and HaNora (Clemon) Amunson, and was the fifth child of ten. He was baptized and confirmed at the Soldier Lutheran Church and graduated from the Soldier High School in 1933. Following graduation, Kermit worked for many different farmers running a threshing machine. He also worked as a mechanic at Carlson’s Hardware store in Soldier and at Skow Equipment at Sheldon, Iowa and was a school bus driver for Soldier. He served in the U.S. Army from May 1942 to October 1945, and was stationed in Europe during World War II.

He was married to Clara J. Bartels of Ute on August 22, 1943 at Muskogee, Ok. The couple moved to a farm south of Ute and have been there ever since. They were privileged to have celebrated their golden anniversary in 1993. Kermit was a devoted and loving husband and father, and enjoyed music, playing cards, and wood-working, creating many wooden craft items for his family. He was a member of the Soldier Legion Post #462 and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Ute.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife of 53 years, Clara of Ute; two sons and their wives, Kenneth and Bette of Ute and Ronald and Debra of Soldier; three daughters and their husbands, Carolyn and Bruce Yockey of Sioux City, Lynette and Harvey Thies of Ute and Leann and Brian Henschen of Sioux City, thirteen grandchildren, Lori and Rick Keating, Lana and Kip Meseck, Shari and Jed Mitchell, Troy, Jason, Christine and Katie Yockey, Kimberly and Gregory Amunson, Heidi, Angela, John and Melissa Thies and two great grandchildren, Danielle and Joshua Keating. Also surviving are two brothers and their wives, Lowell and Esther of Soldier and Clifferd and LeOra of Moville, Iowa; three sisters, Evelyn Flynn of Ute, Elaine Amunson of Castana, and Loreen and her husband, Vernon York of Lancaster, Ca.; a sister-in-law, Hazel Amunson of Soldier and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kermit was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 30, 1996 at 10 a.m. in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Ute, Iowa with Pastor Edgar Bode officiating. Creta Teut organist accompanied the Spirit Singers and Ladies Choir as they sang “In The Garden” and the congregation as they sang “Holy, Holy, Holy.”

Pallbearers were nephews, Willis Hanson, Raymond Frerichs, Gary Amunson, Vonley Hanson, Dale Frerichs, and Donald Amunson.

Military Graveside Services were conducted by the Soldier American Legion Post #462 and Aaby Post #442 of Ute and at the Soldier Valley Lutheran Cemetery, rural Soldier. Arrangements were by Armstrong Funeral Service, Ute.
