30 October 1947Records the Death of a Former Congregational Minister
In “The First Friend” of September we noticed the following article which reads; We are indebted to Mrs. Paul B. Bartlett, daughter of Rev. James B Adkins, for the following account of her father’s life and activities. Mr. Adkins was born at Grinnell, Iowa, July 15, 1860 and passed away July 27, 1947. He was graduated from Grinnell College in the class of 1885, from which institution he received his Master degree some time later. He studied two years at Hartford Theological Seminary in 1889. He married a former college friend, Mary Ellen James at Mibblebury, Vermont in the same year. For the next thirty-two years held pastorates in Congregational churches at Bloomington, Wisconsin; Cortez, Colorado; Onawa, Iowa; Ottawa, Kansas; Belchertown, Mass.; Oskaloosa, Iowa; and Eldon, Iowa. During the ensuing 13 years he served as field secretary for the Iowa Society for the Friendless, retiring at the age of 74. He had since that time lived with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Barrett. He leaves one son Horace James Adkins, of Grinnell, Iowa; and two daughters, Mrs. Oliver Hawks, of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Paul B Bartlett of Lewiston, Maine.
Many of the Congregationalist of Onawa will remember Rev. Adkins.
