Gilbert A. Babbe, 58, of Mapleton, died Saturday, January 25, 1992 at a Sioux City hospital.

Mr. Babbe was born February 23, 1933, in Monona County near Mapleton. He graduated from Mapleton High School in 1950 and served in the Army from 1953 until 1955. He returned to Denison and married Marilyn Beymer July 29, 1956, in Denison. In May 1957, the couple moved to Council Bluffs, where he worked for the mail terminal. In January 1964 they moved to Mapleton, where he was a rural mail carrier. In July 1980 he transferred to the Sloan Post Office.

After 34 years in 1989, he retired from the postal service. Mrs. Babbe died May 20, 1989.

Mr. Babbe was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star and Masonic Lodge, where he was a past Worshipful Master. He was a past member of the Mapleton Jaycees and served on the Rainbow Advisory Board.

Survivors include five daughters, Carla and her husband, Randy Welch of Webster City, Cathy, Carrie and Chana all of Sioux City and Cheryl of LeMars; his mother, Hazel Babbe of Mapleton and two grandsons, Logan and Aaron.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arnold Babbe.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 28 at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Stephen Root officiating.

Burial was in Heisler Cemetery at Mapleton, with military graveside rites conducted by Loren Hollister Post 496, American Legion of Mapleton.

Walter-Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton was in charge of arrangement.
