Norman Allen Country’s Oldest Resident Dies
Succumbed Sunday Following A Short Illness; 101st Birthday January 15

Norman Allen of Castana, who was the oldest resident in Monona County, died Sunday Afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mable Anderson, in Castana.

Mr. Allen celebrated his 101st birthday, with five generations of his family present on January 15.

He had been in fair health up until a few weeks ago, when he fell injuring himself and was critically ill until the time of his death.

Mr. Allen had enjoyed a long and eventful life. He was born in Pennsylvania, coming to Iowa in his youth. He has seen the country grow from a wild prairie into the great nation that it is today. He lived in the time when sad times like the present, had visited the people of the world. He lived among and saw such great men as Abraham Lincoln. U.S. Grant and General Custer, a feat the present day people get a thrill out of reading about.

Surviving are four daughters and one step-daughter; Mrs. George Carroll, Onawa; Mrs. Emma Jenkins, Ticonic; Mrs. Mable Anderson, Castana; Miss Josephine Allen, Herrick, Minn., and the step-daughter, Mrs. Catherine Custer of Ticonic. Mr. Allen was a grandfather to Mrs. Lawrence Funkhouser of Whiting.

A life history of Mr. Allen is to be placed in the Log Cabin located at Smithland, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the home and at 3 o’clock at the Ticonic Methodist Church with Rev. Pruitt of Rodney in charge.

Burial was in the Center Cemetery.
