Bernadine Adkins, 87, Whiting, Iowa, formerly of Onawa, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

Bernadine was born July 1, 1920, at Onawa, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur and Ethel (Moore) Hedges. She graduated from Onawa High School. On May 29, 1937, she married Harold e. Adkins at Dakota City, Nebraska. Mr. Adkins died October 25, 1960, in Onawa, Iowa. She clerked for one session of the Iowa Legislature 1962-1963. She was the Executive Director for the first Low Rent Housing Agency in Monona County and remained until 1977. She also was an emergency medical technician at Burgess Memorial Hospital for awhile.

In the past, she was affiliated with the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Jehovah Witnesses, girl scouting, garden clubs, Onawa Woman’s Club, Business and Professional Woman’s Club and the David McNeill American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Burenheide of Emporia, Kansas; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lewis Hedges of Onawa, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 sons, Kenneth Adkins and Edward Adkins; a daughter, Charlotte Hughes; a brother, Gilbert Hedges; and 3 sisters, Gladys Johnson, Goldie Jones and Zelma Cunningham.

Graveside Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday March 27, 2008, at the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa, with Jeff Ince officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are by Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
