SIOUX CITY -- Lavern C. Jensen, 88, of Waverly, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, at Waverly Health Center.

Services were held Sept. 7 at Bartels Lutheran Home Chapel. Interment was in Sunnyside Cemetery, rural Charles City, Iowa, with military rites by the Nashua VFW Post. Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements. Online condolences for Lavern may be left at hugebackfuneralhome.com.

Lavern C. Jensen was born July 23, 1922, in Ute, Iowa, the son of Chris and Lois (Ridley) Jensen. He graduated from high school in Ute and began working for Security National Bank in Sioux City. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Feb. 3, 1943, and served during World War II as a navy fighter pilot. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 23, 1945. He then attended a business college in Sioux City, then went to Rutgers University in New York for his degree.

Lavern returned to the Security National Bank and became vice president and trust officer at the bank for 46 years, retiring in 1987.

On April 5, 1957, in Sioux City, he married Margaret Graeser of Nashua.

He was active in many organizations including Morningside Lutheran Church, St. Luke's Medical Center, past president of AIB, the United Cerebral Palsy, Travelers Aid, Siouxland Estate Planning Council and Hope Haven in Rock Valley, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Margaret; one son, Jay Jensen of Bettendorf, Iowa; one daughter, Linda (Ronald) Caldwell of Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren, Camie (Mark) Knollenberg, Nick Jensen, Farrah Jensen, Shera (Dale) Barbour and Kade Jensen; four great-grandchildren, Ali Knollenberg, Mitchell Knollenberg, Autumn Jensen and Madyson Jensen; one nephew, Phillip Jacobson of Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister and brother-in-law, Lavera and Dale Jacobson.
