WHITING, Iowa -- Esther Koenig, 76, of Whiting died Thursday, April 1, 2010, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Congregational UCC in Whiting, with the Rev. Reva Karstens officiating. Burial will be in Whiting City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., followed by an Eastern Star service, at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa, Iowa.

Esther Christine Koenig, daughter of Christian John and Hazel Alma (Armstrong) Deitrich, was born Sept. 30, 1933, near Soldier, Iowa. She attended country school near Soldier; then at age 9 her family moved to Holly Springs, Iowa. She attended school there and graduated from Holly Springs High School in 1951.

On Jan. 20, 1952, Esther was united in marriage to Delbert Louis Koenig in Holly Springs. To this union five children were born, Carol, Louise, Paul, Kay and Dale. The family made their home on the Koenig farm west of Whiting. Esther helped on the farm, drove school bus and in later years, drove truck with Delbert.

Esther enjoyed horseback riding, caring for her pets, motorcycles, clowning, camping and any outdoor activities. She loved living life to the fullest and especially enjoyed spending time with her family. Esther was quite the athlete and was a kid at heart.

Esther was a member of First Congregational UCC in Whiting. She served as a Sunday school teacher and was active in the Women's Fellowship. She was a devout Christian and lived her life accordingly. Esther was very active in Order of the Eastern Star. She served as Worthy Matron in the Whiting Chapter No. 470 and in recent years held the office of Ada for Queen Esther Chapter 222 Order of the Eastern Star in Onawa. In addition, Esther was a member of the Siouxland Sillies Clowns and was a Trucker Buddy for the Whiting kindergarten class for several years.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Delbert Louis Koenig of Whiting; their children, Carol Verrill and husband, Dale of Pagosa Springs, Colo., Louise McCall and husband, Walter of Castana, Iowa, Paul Koenig and wife, Janet of Omaha, Kay Ross and husband, Lowell of Whiting, and Dale Koenig and wife, Ela of Rittman, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Agnes Grice of Chicago, Ill., Jane Goldsmith and husband, Brian of Treynor, Iowa, and Ellen Murphy and husband, Mark of Cresco, Iowa; one brother, John Dietrich and wife, Joyce of Denver, Colo.; three sisters-in-law, Sylvia Dietrich of Hornick, Iowa, Eunice Jones and husband, Alvin of Branson, Mo., and Luella Steinhoff and husband, Wayne of Smithland, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, Chris and Hazel Dietrich; one brother, Robert Dietrich; one son-in-law, Robert Mercure; one brother-in-law, Calvin Grice; and two sisters-in-law: Thelma Koenig and Ethel Tippens.
