WHITING, Iowa -- Kenneth A. Barnes, 74, of Whiting passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at his residence.

Private family services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Kenneth Arlyn Barnes was born on March 8, 1936, in Gravity, Iowa, the son of R.C. and Vera (Tacket) Barnes. Ken grew up on a farm in Taylor County, Iowa. He attended rural schools in Taylor County and graduated from Bedford High School. Ken joined the U.S. Army in 1954, where he served for two years. He was a survey operator and paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, making 18 jumps.

Ken was married to Judy K. John in 1955. He married Betty A. Mallicotte in 1956. On March 1, 2001, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Yockey. From 1956 to 1966, he did research for the Department of Agriculture in Beltsville, Md. From 1966 through 1969, he worked at a grocery store in East Lansing, Mich., and from 1969 to 1979, was the owner of a grocery store in Alcester, S.D. He ran a motel in Elk Point, S.D. for the next 10 years. From 1987 to 1990, he worked at Winn-A-Vegas. Beginning in 1992, he was employed by Sunrise Retirement until his retirement in 2004.

Ken is survived by his wife, Dorothy; five sons, Don Lamarr and his wife, Elaine of California, Steve Sigman and his wife, Mary of Alcester, Kenneth Barnes and his wife, Sandy of Alcester, Doyle Barnes and his wife, Crystal of Beresford, S.D., and Neal Barnes and his wife, Mary of Alcester, four daughters, Nora Ludwig of Sioux City, Desi and her husband, Kenny Berg of Sioux Falls, S.D., Serena and her husband, Gary Anderson of Hawarden, Iowa, Nina and her husband, Lt. Col. Anthony McNeil of Lansing, Kan.; one stepson, Rod Yockey and his wife, Sheri of Sloan, Iowa; two brothers, Eldon Barnes of Sioux City, and Gerald Barnes and his wife, Sherrie of New Market, Iowa;

four sisters, Elaine Dillon of Paris, Ark., Eleanor and her husband, Ron Moran of Creston, Iowa, Rebecca and her husband, Gary McKinney of Hastings, Iowa, and Leanna and her husband, Dennis Ohnmacht of Blanchard, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David Lamar Sigman; and a sister, Carlotta Key.
