SOLDIER, Iowa -- Dorothy (Hofling) Hagen, 86, of Soldier died Monday, March 22, 2010, at a Sioux City care center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Soldier Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Meggan Manlove officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa, Iowa.

Dorothy May (Hofling) Hagen, the daughter of Isadore G. and Dagmar W. (Nelson) Hofling, was born May 6, 1923, in Beresford, S.D. She grew up in Elk Point, S.D., where she went to school. Her family ran the Union County farm from 1930 to 1948. After Dorothy graduated from school, she went to work at the Lutheran Hospital in Sioux City as a nurse's aide.

While working there she met her husband, C. Bennett Hagen. They were married on Sept. 19, 1954, in Elk Point at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She moved to Soldier, where she lived with her husband on their farm and took care of his parents and brother. They farmed in the Soldier area for many years before retiring in 1981, and moved into the town of Soldier. Bennett died Oct. 7, 1986. After his death, Dorothy moved to Onawa, Iowa, where she bought a little house and lived there until moving to Center Heights Apartments. She then moved to the Elmwood Care Centre and in 2007 moved to Sioux City Countryside Estates to be closer to her family.

Dorothy was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Elk Point and the Soldier Lutheran Church. While living in Onawa, she attended Faith Lutheran Church. She was involved with the American Legion Auxiliary and Senior Center in Soldier.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Beverly Hofling and Louise Sherrick both of Sioux City; nieces, Claudia (Eric) Howell of Urbandale, Iowa, Darline Warren of Charlotte, N.C., and Susan (Mark) Rochester of Sioux City; nephews, Virgil (Carol) Stewart of Wilmington, Del., George (Judy) Jongeling of Hopkinton, Mass., Charles (Barbara) Jongeling of Lennox, S.D., Greg (Iris) Hofling of Sioux City, Isadore Hofling Jr. of Wichita, Kan., and Jeff (Laura) Thoma of Memphis, Tenn.; and many grandnieces and grandnephews. Dorothy's nieces and nephews were like her own children and they spent many summer vacations with her on the farm. She was thought of like a second mother and grandmother to their children.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Maria Evelyn Jongeling and Anna Louise Ulvog; brothers, Isadore Hofling, James Hofling, and Charles Hofling; and nephews, Daniel Hofling and Bruce Thoma.

She will be remembered for her thoughtful ways, sense of humor and shy smiles. She will be greatly missed by many families, friends, and loved ones.
