ONAWA, Iowa -- Barbara Blagg Zastera, 78, Onawa passed away Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at Elmwood Care Centre at Onawa.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Rush Family Chapel at Onawa. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery.

Barbara Jean was born July 26, 1931, at Lake Preston, S.D., the only child of Harold and Carol (Miller) Blagg. The family moved to Onawa, Iowa, where Barb graduated from Onawa High School and then attended and graduated from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, where she received a teaching degree.

She married Darrel A. Cooper and they had one son, Harold. The family resided in Onawa and Barb spent many years teaching in Sloan, Mondamin, Blencoe and West Monona Schools in Onawa.

After her teaching career, she spent several years as the director of the Onawa Public Library. During her career at the library, she met and eventually married William G. Zastera of Syracuse, Neb. Bill had two children from his first marriage, one daughter Jacqueline and one son Lyle. After her retirement, Barb and Bill enjoyed many years of living between their winter home in Yuma, Ariz., their summer cabin in Park Rapids, Minn., and their permanent home in Onawa.

During her teaching career and beyond, Barb was always learning, teaching, helping others and living life to its fullest. She was a very loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Zastera of Onawa; her son, Harold Cooper and his wife, Susan of La Crosse, Wis.; Bill’s children, Jacqueline and her husband Stephen Kenny of Neosho, Mo., and Lyle Zastera and his wife, Carolyn of Millard, Neb.; and five grandchildren, Laura (Cooper) Johnson of Albuquerque, N.M., Robin Kenny of Chicago, Ill., Beth (Kenny) Mildren of Lawrence, Kan., Tim Kenny of Little Rock, Ark., and Alex Zastera of Millard, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials may be directed to the Onawa Public Library, 710 Iowa Ave.
