UTE, Iowa -- Albert J. Veit, 78, of Ute died Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa, Iowa.

There will be no services. Burial will be at a later date. Armstrong Funeral Home of Ute is in charge of the arrangements.

Albert John Veit was born Jan. 16, 1932, the son of Joseph and Caroline (Smith) Veit, in Odebolt, Iowa. He grew up there and graduated from Odebolt High School with the class of 1950. He worked for a while and then joined the U.S. Army, serving as a Korean War veteran. After his honorable discharge, he returned home.

In 1955, he met Vera Hanson and the couple were married Sept. 17, 1955, in Minnesota. The couple first lived in Odebolt for a few months and then moved to California in pursuit of employment opportunities. Al worked for Arce Brothers Industrial Land Developers starting in 1955. He continued to work there until 1994, when due to health reasons, the couple moved to an acreage near Ute. In 1999, they built their new home in Ute.

He was a talented carpenter and handyman and enjoyed a good game of cards.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Vera; two children, Robert Veit and Mona Barnes of California; and three sisters, Aggie Sporlader and Theresa Soyer of Carroll, Iowa, and Veronica Hughes of Denver, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Joan VanDeKamp, Sally Sigler, and Clarissa Veit; and two brothers, Charles and William Veit.
