SOLDIER, Iowa -- Gladys Opal (Torgerson) Butler, 96, of Roseville, Ill., formerly of Soldier, Iowa, died Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at Roseville Rehab and Health Care Center.

Private graveside services will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Gladys was born Feb. 20, 1914, on a farm south of Soldier, to Ole and Sadie (Johnson) Torgerson, who were immigrants from Norway. She grew up on this farm and another nearby owned by her grandfather J.C. Johnson and her father. Gladys attended Fester Country School. She was a member of Soldier Lutheran Church, being baptized and confirmed in 1929.

Gladys married Charles Harry Butler July 24, 1933, in Dunlap, Iowa. They rented farms near Soldier, Moorhead, Iowa, and Castana, Iowa, until buying an 80-acre farm in Monona County, four miles south of Soldier in 1945. They raised five children. After Charlie's death in March 1975, Gladys moved to Soldier, Onawa and then to Roseville to be near her family.

Gladys enjoyed her neighbors and was well known for her famous raised doughnuts and Norwegian lefse. She sewed beautiful handmade quilts, which also included embroidery. She gardened and canned, and was exceptional at wallpapering, painting and cleaning houses. She enjoyed her children and shared a love of Norway with her father Ole. One of her many joys was saying "uffda" and other Norwegian words knowing that her children did not understand. Gladys loved living on the farm, caring for her children, garden and animals and helping her husband with chores and farm work.

Survivors include four children, Ronald James Butler, Carol Ann Butler and Norma Jean (Terry) Carrico of Roseville and Larry Ray Butler of Kansas City, Kan.; three grandchildren, Kris Butler (Dave Mackmiller) of St. Paul, Minn.; Travis (Tara) Carrico of Ankeny, Iowa, and Mona (Kurt) Douglas of Milo, Iowa; and two great-grandchildren, Jenna Carrico and Kameron Douglas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie; a son, Dean in 2003; a great-grandson Jace Carrico in 2008; and five siblings.
