Mary Josephine (Jungen) Scheer was born May 17, 1920, at Mapleton, the daughter of John and Katherine (Heidesch) Jungen, of Mapleton. Mary worked diligently as a girl on her family's farm east of Mapleton. She graduated from St. Mary's Parochial School at Mapleton and then attended Mapleton High School.

Mary was united in marriage to Delmond E. Scheer on Jan. 28, 1953. The couple farmed for five years south of Ute, Iowa, before moving to their farm northwest of Mapleton in 1958, where they continued to live until 1995. In September 1995, the couple moved into their present home at 303 South Ninth Street in Mapleton.

For more than 50 years, Mary was active in all aspects of farm life including the tending of livestock and the raising of a large annual garden. Mary was the loving mother of two children, Marilyn and Gary. In addition to the rigorous demands placed on an Iowa farm wife, Mary enjoyed baking, crafts, card playing and socializing with family and friends. Mary was a member of St. Mary's Catholic parish in Mapleton and for many years served as an active member and former leader of the St. Mary's Guild.

Survivors include her devoted husband of 57 years, Delmond; one daughter, Marilyn of Los Angeles, Calif.; one son and his wife, Gary and Donna Scheer of Orange, Texas; two granddaughters, Christine Scheer of Houston, Texas, and Stephanie Scheer of Austin, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Katherine Jungen; five brothers, Albert, William, John Jr., Leo and Leonard; and one sister, Martha Gotto-Grindle.

Pallbearers will be John Babl, Daniel Drenkhahn, Richard Hamman, Wayne Hamman, Robert Otto, and Russell Reed.

Although flowers and prayers will be greatly appreciated, the family requests that those wishing to remember Mary in a special way make contributions in her honor to the American Heart Association at www.americanheart.org or the Sioux City office.
