Mrs. George Underhill Died Friday January 11, 1907

Mrs. Elizabeth Underhill, wife of George Underhill, died on Friday at 11 o’clock from an abcess of the liver. Mrs. Underhill had been failing the past two years, but her last sickness was only of two weeks duration. Everything possible was done to restore her again to health but to no avail. On Wednesday a consultation of physicians decided that the only hope of recovery was in an operation. To this end she was taken to a Sioux City hospital on Thursday accompanied by her husband and two daughters, but she grew rapidly weaker and died on Friday morning at 11 o’clock. Dr. Knott, the hospital surgeon saw the approaching end and made no operation.

Mrs. Underhill whose maiden name was Chapman, was born in the city of New York, May 17, 1841 and grew to womanhood in that city. On May 24, 1860 she was united in marriage to George Underhill and ten years later the removed to Onawa where they have since resided. She became a member of the Congregational church under pastor Lyman thirty years ago, and has lived an earnest Christian life. She was a women with a kind heart and her life was crowned in charitable acts dealt out in a quiet manner which has carried sunshine into homes where want and sorrow had left its darkened mantle.

She was ever a devoted wife and a loving mother, whose ministrations to husband and children were only bounded by her ability to serve.

In the community she was loved by a large circle of friends through a friendship of many years.

The funeral was conducted Sunday by her pastor Rev. Zickefoose, he choosing that comforting text in the last chapter of Proverbs dedicated to the honor of motherhood.

The singers rendered appropriate music and the floral offerings, the tribute of societies and friends were many and beautiful.

Mr. Underhill and the daughters, Mrs. J.L. Weidner of Sioux City and Miss Pearl of Onawa, have the sympathy of the community in their sorrow.
