Mary Ross Raymond, 87, of The Forest at Duke, Durham, North Carolina, formerly of Glen Ridge, New Jersey, died Tuesday morning, March 24, at Duke Medical Center.

Mary was born in 1911 in Onawa, Iowa the daughter of Ed C. and Belle Moen. She attended Grinnell College and the University of Iowa, where she received her A.B. in Romance Languages. She was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority and Phi Sigma lota Honor Society.
After varied career which included teaching in Denver, Colorado, and working in the White House with Dr. Isador Lubin, economic advisor to President Roosevelt, she joined the American Red Cross in 1943.

Mary served for two and a half years in North Africa and Italy as a Red Cross Club-mobile worker. Her unit was attached to the 5th Army Forward, where she met her husband-to-be, Col. Robert Raymond, 5th Army Field Artillery. They were married in Florence, Italy, in May 1945. Mary received the Bronze Star for her service in the Red Cross.

The Raymond’s resided in New York City until 1954 when they moved to Glen Ridge, New Jersey. Mary was active in the Glen Ridge Women’s Club, the League of Women Voters, girl scouting, church and civic activities. She volunteered for many years at the Monclair Blood Bank and served on the boards of Planned Parenthood of Essex Country and the Glen Ridge Chapter of the American Red Cross. The family had a summer home on Chebeague Island, Maine. Mary moved to North Carolina in 1995 following the death of her husband in 1990.

Mary was a member of the Society of Mayflowers Descendants and the Onawa, Iowa Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Raymond of Berkeley, California, her son and daughter-in-law, Robert Jr. and Nancy of Par City, Ut, their children Kelsey, Daniela Flemming, and Ryan Flemming and her niece, Grace Rowland of Albuquerque, NM and a cousin, Mrs. Eunice Hanks of Onawa, Iowa.

Services were held in Durham, NC. Memorial contributions may be made to local chapters of Planned Parent-hood. Arrangements were by the Hall-Wayne/Funeral Home in Durham, North Carolina.
