20 September 1993Mapleton, Iowa—Mary E. Fried, 81, of Mapleton, died Saturday, September 18, 1993, at his residence.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Walter-Armstrong Funeral Home, Mapleton, with the Rev. Richard Hempenius officiating. Burial will be in Kennebec Cemetery, Castana, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Fried was born November 11, 1911 at Grant Center, Iowa, daughter of Ernest A and Elizabeth (Bartlet) Harris. They lived in the Grant Center and Soldier communities, later moving south of Mapleton. She married James R. “Shorty” Fried Jan. 1, 1936 at Mapleton. They lived in Mapleton. He died April 2, 1969.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Loren Hollister Unit 496 of Mapleton and had been honored with their Citation of Appreciation. She also received a citation for 20 years of service in recreational programs for the young people of Mapleton and Maple Valley
Survivors include two sons, James Jr. and his wife Diane of Mapleton and Victor of Nashville; two daughters and their husbands, Beth and Gailen Weller of Bennett, Colo. and Elvie and Bill Standefer of Keytesville, Mo. and 18 grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, a sister and two great grandchildren.
