John “Mac” Henry McCartney, son of James and Emma M. (Jenkins) McCartney, was born May 22, 1893 at Burlington, Kansas and died at a Mapleton, Iowa nursing home Friday, August 30, 1974. He had reached the age of 81 years, 3 months and 8 days.
Mr. McCartney moved to Quimby, Iowa in 1914 and worked on a farm there until he entered the army for service in World War I. After his discharge he was united in marriage to Bertha Lickiss on August 19, 1923 at Cherokee, Iowa.
He and his wife lived in Cherokee for several years where he was employed at the Cherokee State Hospital. They later farmed in the Quimby and Galva area for several years and then they moved to Worthington, Minnesota, where he worked in a rendering plant for a short time.
They moved back to Galva where he operated a service station until his retirement. He had made his home at the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton the past 1 ½ years.
Mr. McCartney was of the Methodist faith and was a charter member of the Quimby American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one grandson and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Bertha, of Ute, Iowa; two daughters, Mrs. Carol Fisher of Houston, Texas and Mrs. Lawrence (Jeanne) Hunt of Phillip South Dakota; 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 3, 1974 at 10:30 a.m. at the Methodist Church at Ute, Iowa, Rev Howard Ball officiated and burial was in St Clair Cemetery at Ute with graveside military rites by American Legion Asby Post 442 of Ute.
Pallbearers were Harold Seieroe, Leonard Seieroe, Milford Nordaker, Ronald Lakner, Billy Petersen and Herbert Neumann.
