1 August 1974William Thurston, son of William and Rachel (Amozon)Thurston, was born December 22, 1892 at Thayer, Iowa and died Tuesday, July 23, 1974 at Elizabethtown, Kentucky. He had reached the age of 81 years, 6 months and 21 days.
Mr. Thurston resided at Thayer until the First World War when he served in the Army as Communication lineman.
After his discharge he continued to work as a lineman for the Iowa Bell Telephone Co., working from town to town toward Chicago, Illinois.
He married Marie Christiansen on June 21, 1925 at Mapleton. She preceded him in death on April 10, 1947. He then married Irene Bansau on June 19, 1948 in Maywood, Illinois where they made their home until 1958 when they moved to Lake Villa, Illinois. The past nine months they had made their home in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Mr. Thurston was a member of the Lake Villa Baptist Church and a 50 year member of the Masons at Thayer, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, one brother and four sisters, and one grandson.
Survivors include his wife, Irene; one son, William E. of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; and one daughter, Mrs. William (Marjorie Ann) Isom of Sullivan, Illinois; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 27, 1974 at 1:30 p.m. at the Walter Chapel at Mapleton, Iowa. The Rev. John Hall officiated. Burial was in the Mount Hope Cemetery at Mapleton, Iowa.
Pallbearers were Harry Leemaster, Donald Leemaster, Phillip Jacobson, Sheldon Jacobson, Curtis Androy and Donald Winkowski.
