Mr. Nel G. Thompson, a lifetime resident of Monona County, passed from this life at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Holstein, Iowa on Monday, September 13, 1971. He had reached the age of 85 years, 10 months and 12 days.
He was the son of Isabel and Erick Thompson and was born on November 1, 1885 near Moorhead. He lived in the Moorhead and Soldier community for about 79 years, where he engaged in farming all his active life.
He was baptized on December 17, 1885 and confirmed on June 8, 1902 in the Soldier Lutheran Church. In recent years he lived at Onawa from 1964 to 1968 and had been at Holstein since 1968.
He was united in marriage to Violet Kline Voss on January 17, 1927 at Council Bluffs, Iowa. Mrs. Thompson passed away on December 27, 1968.
Nel is survived by two sons, Franklin Voss of Lincoln, Nebr. and Elmer Thompson of Omaha, Nebr.; five daughters, Mrs. Walter (Emma) Thies of Dunlap, Iowa; Mrs. Leo (Virginia) Carlson of Onawa; Mrs. Lester (Colleen) Vohs of Galva, Iowa; Mrs. George (Delores) Leonard at Holstein, Iowa and Mrs. Wilbert (Carol) Dose of Danbury, Iowa. There are 28 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. One sister also survives, Mrs. Ida Lee of Onawa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Anna, who died in infancy; also three sisters, Annie, Cora and Emma and one brother, Elmer.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 1971 at the Soldier Lutheran Church with Pastor Arnold Mathisen officiating. Randy Carlson sang, “How Great Thou Art,” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand,” accompanied by Mrs. Harry Andersen. Bearers were Elliott Lee, John A. Hinkel, Myrlin Lee, Beryl Hicks, Clark Ruffcorn and Blair Erickson. Interment was in the Magnolia, Iowa cemetery with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home.
