20 May 1915Susan Maria Williams Thurston was born May 21, 1836 in Cazenovia, New York, and was married to James R. Thurston in 1856 and came to Cass County, in the spring of 1857 and to Monona County in 1861 where they located on a farm one mile west of the town of Blencoe until 1876 when they came to Onawa where they have resided since, with the exception of the year of 1893, spent in Omaha. She united with the Baptist church at fifteen years of age, and with the Congregational church in Onawa about fifty years ago. Two daughters and three sons were born to this union, two sons having gone before.
Mr. and Mrs. Thurston four years ago spent the winter in Florida and at this time Mrs. Thurston was taken seriously sick and since then has been in poor health.
Mrs. Thurston was a pioneer of Onawa, and when health and age permitted was active in the religious and social life of the town.
The funeral was held form the family home on Saturday at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. George Croker, of Whiting and was attended by many pioneers who had known the departed for a half century or more.
