Ellen Cynthia Young, daughter of William and Sarah Johnson, was born April 4, 1870 in Humbolt, Nebraska. She passed from this life February 4th in the Onawa Hospital at the age of 86 years and 10 months.

She came to Iowa, when a child, by covered wagon and settled near Battle Creek.

On May 1, 1887, she was united in marriage with Perry Young in Battle Creek. To this union ten children were born. Three years after their marriage they moved to Monona County, where she has since made her home, living on a farm until 16 years ago, at which time they retired and moved into Onawa.

She has always been a religious woman; her membership was in the 7th Day Adventist Church. She was a kind and loving mother, also a great great -grandmother. Her passing will be deeply felt by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her husband and 2 daughters. Surviving are five sons: Arthur and Melvin of St. Joseph, Mo, Wayne of Little Sioux, Elton of Blair, Nebr., and Burnell of Onawa, three daughters; Mrs. Goldie Hessler of St Joseph, Mo., Mrs. Thelma Simmons of Onawa and Mrs. Ruby Wood of Pisgah; 36 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Young were held on Thursday, February 7th at 2 p.m. at the Pearson funeral home, Rev Everett Epperson was the officiating minister, Mrs. Margaret Gray sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “In The Sweet Bye and Bye” accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Clara Kelley.

Bearers were grandsons, Duane Simmons, Norman Wood, Darrell, George, Franklin and Perry Young. Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery.
