Herman S. Ulven, Onawa, Iowa, died on Monday, January 11, 1988, in the Dunlap Care Center in Dunlap following a long illness. Death came at the age of 78 years and 22 days.

He was born in Soldier on December 20, 1909, the son of Evan and Amelia (Amunson) Ulven. He graduated from Soldier High School in 1931. He had been a tailor at Moen Clothing Store in Onawa for many years. He also operated a furniture upholstery business in Onawa until poor health forced his retirement. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and served as a tailor for Army officers until his discharge in 1945. He had been a resident of Dunlap Care Center since June 1987.

Herman’s prize possession was a small organ and he loved to spend time playing it.

He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Earl (Cora) Howard of Dunlap, Alice Solberg and Evelyn Seaton, both of Moorhead and Mrs. Bill (Gilma) Kirchoff of San Rafael, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 14, 1988, at the Pearson Funeral Chapel in Onawa with Pastor Quentin Quanbeck officiating. The organist, Mrs. Ivan Gibbs, played “Amazing Grace” and “The Old Rugged Cross”.

Bearers were Dick Howard, Rod Ulven, Donald Solberg, Gary Winters, Verne Ulven and Earl Thelander.

Interment was in the Soldier Lutheran Church Cemetery at Soldier with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
