Gladys M. Ulven, 80, of Onawa, died Tuesday, January 18, 2000, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa. She had resided at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting for the past 3 years.

Gladys was born August 9, 1919, in Decatur, Nebraska, the daughter of George and Bertha (Sutton) Stanley. From the age of four, she was raised by William and Mary Titze. She graduated from Tekamah (Neb) High School. In April 1939 she married Elmer O. Ulven.

She was employed with J.C. Penney’s in Tekamah and at Brandeis in Omaha in the ladies ready to wear department. She later owned and operated the dress stores Style Shop and Price is Right, both in Onawa. She later operated a craft store in Onawa.

She was baptized and raised in the Baptist Church. She enjoyed painting and taking classes.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Cathy and Leland Rickabaugh of Whiting, a son and his wife, Rodney and Jean Ulven of Onawa; four grandchildren, Joey Spitz of Whiting, Lynn Rickabaugh of Whiting, Chad Rickabaugh of Denver, Co, and Travis and his wife, Tonya Ulven of Onawa; one sister, Nora Sutton of Indiana; and three sisters-in-law Dorothy Stanley of Sloan, Iowa, Opal Stanley of Sioux City and Donna Stanley of Camdenton. Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; foster parents; four brothers, Robert, Byron, Gerald and Bill; three sisters, Hazel, Gertrude and Leta and a brother and sister in infancy.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 22, 2000 at Pearson Funeral Chapel in Onawa, with Pastor Donald Ludwick officiating. The organist Mrs. Jack Jordan accompanied the vocalist, Mr. Donald Collison, in the selection “Whispering Hope” and “The Lord’s Prayer”.

Casket Bearers were Chad Rickabaugh, Travis Ulven, Donald Collison, Kenneth Stanley, Thomas Templeton and Harry Struble.

Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa.
