LaVerne A “Shorty” Solberg, Moorhead, Iowa, passed away at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa on June 16, 1980. He had reached the age of 76 years 7 months and 4 days.

He was born in Willow Township near Moorhead on November 12, 1903 the son of Oscar and Hilda Hedum Solberg. He was a lifelong resident of Moorhead having been in business there many years.

He married Alice Ulven on November 3, 1923, at Onawa. “Shorty” was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church at Moorhead and a member and Past Master of Elk Lodge No. 586 A.F. & A.M. at Moorhead.

Survivors are his wife, Alice, of Moorhead; a daughter, Mrs. Earl (Joyce) Ballantyne of Moorhead; four sons, Donald and Gordon both of Moorhead, Russell of Hawarden, Iowa and Jerry of Postville, Iowa; one sister Mrs. Hollis Hamilton of Salix, Iowa and two brothers, Raymond of Elk Point, South Dakota and William of Denison, Iowa. There are 26 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday June 19, 1980, at Bethesda Lutheran Church at Moorhead with Rev. Luther Flugstad officiating. The organist, Mrs. Alfred Holz played the selections “How Great Thou Art” and “Precious Lord Take My Hand”.

Honorary Bearers were Kleon Ballantvne, Charles Sorenson, Floyd Clark, Wilbur Skow, James Pickle and Loren Coberly. Active Bearers were Richie Ballantyne, Rodney Ballantyne, Larry Solberg, Jeff Solberg, Mike Solberg and Randy Solberg.

Interment was in Spring Valley Cemetery, Moorhead, Iowa with arrangements by Pearson Funeral Home of Soldier, Iowa.
