6 February 1936James Roland Koontz, well-known and beloved pioneer of Monona County since 1871, died Tuesday, January 28 at 5:30 a.m. at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James A. Folwell, following a several months’ illness. Always interested in the welfare of the county, he was one-time street commissioner of Onawa. Mr. Koontz was an honored member of the I.O.O.F. lodge joining at Old Carrolton, Iowa in 1890 and later transferring his membership to Monona County. His many friends knew him as a kind and lovable man.
He was the son of William and Tryphena Koontz, born at Bellevue, February 24, 1859 where he lived until twelve years old. He moved with his parents to Monona County. In 1885 at Arcadia he married Katherine Zenner, October 9th. She preceded him in death September 1, 1926. All five of their children survive: Mrs. Carl Clark, George and Frank all of Onawa, Mrs. James Folwell of Whiting and William of Sergeant Bluff. Four brothers preceded him in death and one sister, Mrs. Emma Parish of Portland, Oregon, is still living. Nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren and other relatives survive him.
Services were held at the Christian Church in Onawa Friday in charge of Rev. O.B. Anderson. Interment was made at Ute.
