15 February 2000Mapleton, Iowa—Hazel Lucille Babbe, 86, of Mapleton died Sunday, February 13, 2000, at Sunrise Manor in Sioux City.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Shirley Textor officiating. Burial will be in Heisler Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Mrs. Babbe was born November 29, 1912 in Turin, Iowa, the daughter of David and Ida (Means) Davis.
She married Arnold C Babbe on December 15, 1931, in Dakota City. The couple farmed near Mapleton until 1956, when they moved to Denison, Iowa. The owned and operated a café and tavern for two years. They returned to Mapleton, where they owned and operated Hazel’s Place for several years. She was later employed with various local businesses. He died July 24, 1980.
She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church and enjoyed fishing, bowling, gardening and playing cards.
Survivors include five granddaughters, Carla and her husband, Randy Welch of Kamrar, Iowa, Cathy and her husband, Jeff Anderson of South Sioux City, Carrie Babbe of West Des Moines, Cheryl and her husband, Jeff Utterback of Sioux City and Chana and her husband, John Lee of Onawa, Iowa, nine great-grandchildren and brother-in-law, Mel Rogge of Correctionville, Iowa and a sister-in-law, Louie Davis of Mapleton.
She was preceded in death by a son, Gilbert; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn; four brothers, Leo, Bill, Lawrence and Richard; and two sisters, Charlotte and Mabel.

24 February 2000Hazel L. Babbe, age 86, of Mapleton, Iowa, died Sunday, February 13, 2000, at Sioux City, Iowa.
Services were held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 16 at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Mapleton with Pastor Shirley Textor officiating. Burial was in Heisler Cemetery, Mapleton. Marie Whiteing was the organist and soloist for the service and music was “Just a Closer Walk With Thee” and the congregational sang, “Amazing Grace”. Visitation was held at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton on Tuesday with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Hazel was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Mapleton. She enjoyed fishing at Lake View, Iowa as well as bowling, gardening, playing cards and spoiling her pets.
Those survivors left to cherish her memory include five granddaughters, Carla Welch and her husband, Randy of Kamrar, Iowa, Cathy Anderson and her husband, Jeff of South Sioux City, Nebraska, Carrie Babbe of West Des Moines, Iowa, Cheryl Utterback and her husband, Jeff of Sioux City, Iowa and Chana Lee and her husband, John of Onawa, Iowa; nine great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Mel Rogge of Correctionville, Iowa and one sister-in-law, Louise Davis of Mapleton, Iowa, along with many other relatives, neighbors and friends.
Along with her husband, Hazel was preceded in death by one son, Gilbert and his wife, Marilyn; four brothers, Leo, Bill, Lawrence and Richard and two sisters, Charlotte and Mabel.
Pallbearers were John Lee, Jeff Anderson, Jeff Utterback, Randy Welch, Logan Welch and Aaron Welch.
